The one thing I learned to understand is that if I stop comparing myself to the uber talented folks out there and use them more as an inspiration, the stress of being the best at that program alleviates a bit. Being on one OS kind of makes it hard for some folks to change OS and computers just for 1-2 programs. As someone who is also trained in using FCP, yes that tool makes it easy to get a grasp to a certain degree but Apple Motion does not have anywhere near the community of users compared to After Effects. And this is after watching training from Andrew Kramer, reading the After Effects Apprentice and absorbing hours of training from various AE gurus online. I've been using that program for almost 2 decades and there are still things I learn on a daily basis. AE looks hard because the fundamentals aren't for made for ppl who aren't willing to invest time learning them. The common mistake new users make on either program is expecting the other one to do its job. This isn’t controversial, it’s not an elitist thing, it’s an observable fact.īoth Premiere and After Effects are vast programs designed for different purposes. But there’s also a lot of times where you gotta get in there and really finesse it. And there are certainly a lot of times where you don’t need much. I don’t disagree that people should always block out their animations with simple keyframes. Most of it would not be considered simple keyframing. I see it literally everyday when people showcase BTS work and show their keyframes. Complicated or simple keyframing doesn’t dictate quality of work, somebody who has more “complex” keyframes isn’t superior to someone who doesn’t.īut there is an astronomical amount of work done in AE that I definitely wouldn’t call simple keyframing. Your experience is your own, and stating to a beginner or just in general that 80% of all motion design work can be achieved with simple key frames is just false. I understand how someone might feel overwhelmed the first couple of times they open the software, but unless the first thing you want to do is some super complicated Trapcode VFX shot, I don't think the learning curve is that steap if you start with the basics and work your way up from there. On the occasions when I have to do stuff like Keying, Tracking or whatnot that I have forgotten how to do since the last time, I watch a short YT tutorial. The rest is experience, developing a sense for timing, and learning short cuts, expressions and plug ins to save time (and keeping your files organized). If you understand how keyframes work, and where you can find things in the admittedly cluttered UI, you can do what I do. I genuinely don't think it's that difficult. Not sure if that's some elitism coming from you, but yes, 80 percent of what has paid my bills for the last 7 years boils down to placing keyframes, meddling with the graph editor and adjusting mattes and mask.
